I remember one of the first things my tutor at art school said,”open your eyes, look at the world through painter’s eyes”. I have done that ever since and I try to keep that sense of wonder in my paintings.
Initial inspiration comes from being outside; the weather, sounds, light. The changing moods brought on by the sky fascinate me. I love watching the clouds flit across the mountains or the dark purple grey of a storm looming, with tiny flashes of sun on the hills. Brief moments like these form the spark of an idea. I then work on the paintings in my studio, which allows time to take a hand in the process. It is important to me that a painting has a ”life” of its own and is not just a copy of a picturesque scene. I like to let the paint itself “take over” the picture. That is the great challenge; to let the paint recreate the initial spark that preceded the painting process.
I also make frequent visits to Scotland (mainly the west coast and islands) as it never fails to inspire and excite! The vastness and the sea bring me back again and again. I studied at Falmouth School of Art in Cornwall and then lived in Edinburgh for a couple of years after leaving college. I think I absorbed both Cornish and Scottish influences along the way!
