My work is mainly landscape based concentrating on the fells
around my home and other areas recently visited.
Colour is obviously important to me, the mountains can change
from one second to the next and these fleeting changes often
lift the whole landscape, and that of the painting in return.
Sometimes it is clear that the abstract qualities of the paint
are as relevant as the representation of the image, which
can sometimes be restricting. I like to keep an element of
fun and experimentation in my work to keep the paintings fresh
and not to get too worried about any one particular component
or process.
The figures, that often occur in my paintings, are now very
much an intergral part of the landscape. Sometimes they are
seemingly insignificant and at other times can not be missed.
They are part of the whole painting and are worked on at the
same time as the other features to capture the entirety rather
than being seen as an addition. Though it is always the painting
that decides.
